Why do we need to repent?
As we all knew that we (Christians) are all sinners (Ephesians 2:1 spiritually dead) and only through faith together with repentance in the name of Christ we will become spiritually alive(restored). The new life as being mentioned in 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! There will be freedom from the bondage of sin and also a progressive transformation of life starts as a result of a true repentance.
What does it mean by repentance?
Repentance is so essential in a Christian life, acting as the, "turning away from sin" and "turning oneself towards God" to receive forgiveness as the way of restoration of our relationship and fellowship with Him. It is not a one-time event but a continuous, "lifestyle" of transformation" fueled by the Holy Spirit (John 14:26) that brings spiritual growth, peace, and freedom from guilt.
It is also deemed so important that it is, "essentially" a foundation for salvation", as it demonstrates a genuine and a submissive faith rather than just a, "fleeting feeling of guilt". Acts 3:19 ("Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out") and 1 John 1:9 ("If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us"). Other significant verses highlight that repentance brings joy in heaven (Luke 15:7) and that God commands all people to repent (Acts 17:30).
These are the importance of repentance:
Foundation for Salvation: Jesus began His ministry calling for repentance (Matthew 4:17), marking it as the starting line of the Christian journey and necessary for salvation.
Forgiveness and Cleansing: It is the means to have sins removed, offering relief from the guilt and shame of transgressions.
Ongoing Transformation: Repentance involves a change of mind and attitude, allowing the Holy Spirit to help believers overcome sin over time. Not just a feeling of regret, but a, "180-degree turn" in actions and direction. Saying No to sin anymore but Yes and Focus in Jesus Christ.
Intimacy with God: It breaks down the barrier of sin, fostering a deeper, closer relationship with God.
A "Broken Spirit": True repentance requires humility—a broken and contrite heart that God accepts, rather than prideful self-justification.
Purpose: The ultimate goal is for us to receive forgiveness, cleanse from sin, restore fellowship with our Heavenly Father and the gift of salvation.
Punishment for Unrepentant (Luke 13:3 (ESV): "No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish".
